Northern FC forfeits, Iguanas clinch second
Playoffs start 8/22Updated Thursday August 20, 2015 by Eric Thompson.
After Iguanas dismantled Northern FC 9-2 earlier in the season, one would be hard pressed to find an easier win for Iguanas. It turns out that there was in fact an easier victory to be had--a forfeit. Northern FC has been ravaged by injuries throughout the season en route to a 1-13-0 record that has them at the bottom of the Monday D2 standings. They weren't able to field a full squad for the regular season finale against Iguanas so the game was scored as a 2-0 walkover. Iguanas officially finished the regular season with a record of 9-3-2.
The forfeit turned out to be meaningless as Iguanas were already locked into second place regardless of the outcome. After a 5-1 loss to league leaders Dunesday the previous week, Iguanas knew that they wouldn't be promoted to Division 1 next season and they couldn't fall past second in the standings. Promotion to the ultra-competitive first division wasn't exactly a fate most of the Iguanas players strived for to begin with, so coming in second should suit Iguanas just fine.
Up next for Iguanas is the first round of the Division 2 playoffs on Saturday, August 22. The game will take place at 10:00 AM at Rich Valley Field A in Eagan. Iguanas will take on Junior Legends in the quarterfinals, who went 3-6-3 in Sunday Division 2.
