Short-Handed Iguanas Chug Past Beer Engines, 6-1

Second straight victory moves Iguanas up in the standings

Updated Thursday August 1, 2013 by Eric Thompson.

Things looked pretty bleak for Iguanas as they kicked off a must-win game against Beer Engines FC. Iguanas only had ten men for the first 20 minutes of the game and zero subs for the entire game. One of the Iguanas players, stopper Jeremy Leinberger, was playing with a fairly significant groin injury as well.

Beer Engines took advantage of their numbers and put the pressure on the Iguanas defense early on. After a few close calls that were thwarted by Iguanas, Beer Engines finally got on the board right as eleventh man Chris Thueringer was about to take the field. A quick series of passes led to a breakaway that the Beer Engines FC striker slotted past Jason Radatz for the 1-0 lead.

Iguanas were able to create more scoring chances after finally getting to full strength 20 minutes in. They created a lot of 1-on-1 opportunities and open shots with some quick downfield passing but their finishing left much to be desired. While Iguanas were starting to control the run of play at the halftime whistle, Beer Engines still led by a goal.

Luckily for Iguanas, the second half played out just slightly different than the first.

Iguanas evened the score very early in the second half. A nice give-and-go between Brian Pearson and Paul Ross ended with Pearson blasting one past the Beer Engines keeper for the equalizer.

And Iguanas were far from done.

They took the lead just a few minutes later when Ross made a quick turn and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net. Suddenly down a goal, Beer Engines pushed more upfield to try and even the score again but their ambitious tactics backfired.

The Beer Engines simply had no answer for Pearson's speed, Ross' strength, or Josh Hanson's quick pressure as Iguanas racked up four more goals in the second half. Pearson ended up with a hat trick and Hanson added two goals to round out the six-goal night for Iguanas. Ross had three assists to go with his goal while Pearson, Stefan Lucyk, and Sil Chiriac all added one assist each. While Beer Engines had a couple narrow misses after the game was well in hand, they couldn't score again and the game ended as a 6-1 Iguanas victory.

Iguanas improved their playoff positioning with their second straight win but they'll need to keep their winning ways alive next week. Their upcoming opponents, ACME, currently sit one point ahead of Iguanas for the 4th and final playoff spot in the division. Iguanas will need to avenge their 4-3 loss to ACME from earlier in the season if they wish to keep rising back up the table and into the playoffs.
